One focus of our group is the examination of the biology of different kinds of macrophages, among those pro-inflammatory as well as anti-inflammatory subtypes. It is well known, that there is an influx of macrophages into adipose tissue, which is characterized by increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, a hallmark of chronic inflammation. As the numbers of obese people increases constantly worldwide, there is also an increasing number of secondary diseases like metabolic syndrome, artheriosclerosis and stroke. Therefore there is an urgent need to unravel the pathophysiology of adipositas and its concomitant health risks. Since the source of the chronic inflammation is not clear yet, we focus on a possible contribution of adipose tissue macrophages.

Actually we are looking for a Bachelor student who is interested to work in the field of bioinformatics and genomics. You will get access to data sets of macrophages determined by gene expression arrays. You will search for factors which might be involved in a cellular program induced by fatty acids present in daily nutrition compounds. Using a systems biology approach you will use several kinds of statistic programs to find hot candidate factors which can be further investigated under in vitro conditions in the lab.
